Russell Street Missionary Baptist Church (RSMBC) is the oldest church in the NorthEnd Section in the City of Detroit. RSMBC was founded in 1916 as the Sons & Daughters Sunrise Society. RSMBC’s foundation is built on members who have long standing personal, and familial relationships with the church. RSMBC is affectionately known throughout the neighborhood, simply as “Russell Street”.
Overview
The role of the Pastor is to spiritually lead and physically grow the membership of the church year after year. The Pastor should build strong relationships within the community. The Pastor will have a firm grasp on the purpose, values and strategy of the church and the ability to align ordained and lay staff and key leadership teams with its mission. The Pastor will offer pastoral leadership to the congregation alongside clergy and lay ministers.
Responsibilities
Preaching and Teaching
- Motivate, equip, nurture and inspire the people of God through example, preaching and teaching God’s Word (Bible Study, Sunday School, etc.), and providing spiritual advice and counsel
- Preside over worship services, funeral services, weddings, and baby dedications
- Administer the Church Ordinances: The Lord’s Supper and Baptism
Pastoral Care
- Lead and oversee the spiritual well-being of the church
- Provide Christian counseling commensurate with their education, professional training and credentials attained
- Visiting persons who are hospitalized, confined to home, or extended care facility as well as delegating these responsibilities to the Deacons, Clergy, and church leaders as appropriate
Staff Supervision and Development
- Establish working relationships with officers and ministry leaders to cast vision and implementation of goals and objectives
- Committed to professional growth, education and training of church officers and ministry leaders
Administration
- Act as a moderator of church business meetings
- Serve as an ex-officio member of all ministries and committees
- Involved in local, state, and national ecumenical organizations
Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications
- 5 years of pastoral experience with ministry leadership and/or administrative responsibilities
- Degree from an 4-year accredited college or university, seminary, or equivalence certified by transcript
- Licensed and ordained as a minister of the Gospel licensed and ordained by a Baptist church or Christian ecclesiastical body
- Strong written and oral communication skills, ability to teach practical lessons and sermons
- Strong leadership, business, and financial skills relative to the church’s interests in economic development, grants, projects, or nonprofit programs, etc.
- Understanding of technology, including social media and virtual ministry operations
